Medical Marijuana: A Contentious Topic

Imagine coming into work one morning to discover that your credit card services have been suspended overnight. They were cut off for “unacceptable business practises,” not for lack of payment or for being involved in an illegal business. Many medical marijuana dispensary owners face this fact as they get “creative” with their applications; and if you fabricated the application, it may be a legal termination – but it isn’t always the case. Service Discontinued
The scenario described above is not unusual. Alternative Medical Option, Inc., a consulting service located in Oregon, experienced this recently. What did AMC do to get in trouble with Intuit, their service provider? AMC is a company that provides physicians with consultations in order to obtain permission for medical cannabis use under Oregon law. The clinic has lost its facilities despite the fact that it does not dispense or sell medicinal cannabis.
According to Intuit, services were discontinued because AMC failed to disclose its association with medical marijuana. When asked about the 3000 other accounts they have with clinics that provide the same treatment, they said they wouldn’t be ending those accounts because they didn’t have medical cannabis on their websites. AMC offered to take down the reference, but Intuit has refused to reinstate the account because “now we know.”
PayPal, an online payment provider, has also shut down accounts related to medical marijuana consultations.

Other Alphabet Soup: DEA, FDA, IOM, and Others
Part of the issue that companies face is the debate about whether marijuana is really therapeutic. Smoking marijuana has no medicinal benefit, according to the DEA and the US government. The American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics all agree that smoking is not the best way to obtain any advantages, if any exist. Alternative ingestion approaches are being studied.
And the vast Institute of Medicine research that supporters of medicinal marijuana often quote is against the use of smoking marijuana for medical purposes. The study discovered that cannabinoid drugs, especially THC, had some “potentially therapeutic” benefits, but that other available medications performed better. The IOM rejected the idea of further studies due to a lack of standardisation, dosage process, and other factors.

What’s Next for Us?
Few people, like many other hot potatoes, want to deal with this one. The difficulties in accessing conventional funding, accounts, and facilities have become daunting for those who have opened dispensaries. Alternatives are available for those who want to stay in the market.
Although it is still illegal to sell cannabis over the internet, it is a good place to look for businesses that are willing, if not ready, to enter the market. Entrepreneurs can find the services they need without obfuscation by looking for merchant account suppliers that are familiar with the risks associated with legal medical marijuana sales.
