Enabled carbon, what is it?
You hear the word activated carbon philtres, but maybe you don’t know exactly what they refer to. These philtres are made from bituminous coal bits of cocoon shell carbon or carbon. The carbon parts and particles are placed on a filtering material and serve as little traps of contaminants.
The reason those philtres are referred to as triggered is because they are heated without air through a mechanism. Oxidizing gases are passed through the carbon when hot, and are considered to be triggered at that point. In fact, the activation refers to the fact that the carbon is now positively charged and can attract negative-ion pollutants.
The active filtration systems are called water filtration adsorption. The word adsorption refers to the fact that chemicals bind to the activated carbon ‘s surface. The pieces of carbon are like small magnets which attract and hold onto whatever it can.
Carbon-based water filtration devices such as the faucet instal, countertop and under the counter units are widely used in kitchen drinking water systems. The philtres work well in cold water but the water has to flow slowly enough over the carbon to allow the attraction of positive-negative ions to occur.
What is a block of Carbon?
A Block is yet another type of water filtration systems based on carbon. A carbon block is a piece of carbon which has a honeycomb. Many think this is a better philtre than the triggered Type, but both will work pretty well.
A host of pollutants can be gotten rid of by these philtres. Such water pollutants include, to name a few, chlorine, copper, arsenic , lead, chemical cleaners, micro-organisms, radon, and VOCs. Only philtres which are rated NSF / ANSI should be purchased to meet norm 53 written for water filtration systems.
Other types of filtration units, such as reverse osmosis, also have this type of water filtration device. The carbon philtres either attract or do not treat certain pollutants that the big filtering system misses.
In the kitchen or bathroom, there is one downside of using carbon based philtres. The carbon gathers the micro-organisms when they are warm. For bacterial growth, this provides an ideal medium. You need to make sure you make daily adjustments to the philtres.
The carbon based water filtration systems are economical and do a great job if you are looking for an inexpensive and nominally priced water filtering system. Carbon has been used as a filtering agent for a long time and for that there is a reason-it works!
